Music and Expression

Music, at its essence, is about communicating our thoughts, feelings, and emotions through melodies and harmonies that have expressive power beyond mere words. It can touch the heart in a powerful way and leave an impression that lasts a lifetime.

In my opinion, there are essentially three kinds of musical expression:

  1. Self-Expression
  2. Social Expression
  3. Spiritual Expression

Music aimed at self-expression may be fulfilling for a time, but it ultimately leaves us wanting more. It keeps us focused on ourselves, which is diametrically opposed to what the Bible teaches—focusing on Christ instead. Music for social expression is more enriching and offers lasting rewards—choir singing, ensemble playing, bands, wedding music—all serve to connect and celebrate with one another in a meaningful way. After all, who doesn’t love to dance at a wedding or play with friends in a band? However, music for spiritual expression transcends all the rest—it is the ultimate expression where individuals and communities reach out to God to magnify and extol Him, and our lives are imbued with deeper meaning, human connections, and lasting satisfaction through this important spiritual practice.

I am called not just to teach music, or lead a band or choir, but also to enable worshippers to have an avenue through which they can express their spirituality. I strive to elevate worship and singing to God as the highest form of musical expression, one that, regardless of musical background, allows any individual to participate and connect with God and His people.

Psalm 57:7 New International Version (NIV)

My heart, O God, is steadfast; my heart is steadfast. I will sing and make music.
